Barbara Edwards Contemporary, Calgary is pleased to present a solo exhibition of prints and drawings by famed Montreal artist, Betty Goodwin (1923-2008). Spanning over 15 years of artistic production between 1972-1999, the works on exhibition have been selected from the personal collection of renowned Canadian art dealer, Jared Sable. As Goodwin’s Toronto dealer, Sable amassed one of the finest private collections of Goodwin’s work, including examples from the artist’s iconic Swimmer and Seated Figure series. Goodwin’s “emotionally charged figurative art”, as critic Robert Storr has described, expresses the vulnerable and transitory nature of the human condition. The evocative power of Goodwin’s images makes tangible the invisible reality of life’s fragility.

Goodwin has had numerous solo and group shows within Canada; the United Stated and Europe. She has represented Canada at many international events, including Tokyo International Print Biennial in 1974; Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts, 1975; São Paulo Biennial, 1989 and the Venice Biennial in 1995. Goodwin has been the recipient of several awards including the Victor Martyn Lynch-Staunton Award of the Canada Council for the Arts, 1981, the Banff Centre National Award for Visual Arts, 1984, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, 1988. In 2003 Goodwin was honored with the Governor General’s Award and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Her work can be found in major public and private collections across the country, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
